WayStone

An exploration into solo game development

WayStone was a project with several goals in place at its inception.

  • To be my own personal debut into game development, and to help me understand more of the roles that work together on a game design team.

  • To share the narrative of a relatable and lovable character that, in its simplicity, everyone can find pieces of themselves.

  • Finally, to create a world that inspires more questions in the mind of the players.

Narrative

In creating WayStone, I was inspired by projects that use implied messages to inspire user questions and speculation. For example, in making Colm a golem instead of something biological, and by allowing him to explore ruins while looking for creatures like him, it brings the question of time into play. How long has he been inert, and was it other golems who built the structures all those years ago?

The WayStone itself, however, was deliberately left as an unconnected piece. With no connection to Colm, golems, or the world as a whole, I wanted to create the question of why this magical floating rock decides to attach itself to a sentient stone creature?

Sprites

As part of WayStones creation, I made and animated the sprites.

Tools used

In creating WayStone I used the P5 JavaScript library for programming and animation, and the sprites were made with Adobe Illustrator. After the initial project was completed, I ported the code and assets to the Processing language.
